About Eddie Offermann

Visual effects veteran, software architect, and founder of Big Blue Ceiling.

I founded Big Blue Ceiling as a think tank and consultancy for emerging technology. Our work runs from prototyping and fabrication to the software that media production depends on: AI systems, XR hardware and software, production pipelines and computational optics.

Background

I moved from software and technical illustration into teaching visual effects in Orlando. From there I went to Asylum Effects and Method Studios in Santa Monica, and then became pipeline architect at Mirada Studios in Marina Del Rey, the studio co-founded by Guillermo del Toro. At Mirada I also worked as a virtual and augmented reality researcher and software architect. Along the way I picked up visual effects credits on more than forty feature films, from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to Pacific Rim.

Before visual effects, my background included education, defense aerospace and corporate communications. Since then, rapid prototyping of full-stack hardware and software experiences has taken me to Silicon Valley companies and major game studios.

That mix of production pipelines, realtime graphics and research led to Big Blue Ceiling. It started with extended reality and has since grown into AI systems, production tools and computational optics.

I studied philosophy and psychology at the University of Central Florida. I'm a member of ACM SIGGRAPH and SMPTE, and I'm based in Sonora, California.
